The incident took place around 8 p.m., Wednesday, June 16 in Holyoke.

A Holyoke Police dispatcher reportedly observed a physical altercation between two women on Elm Street in Holyoke.

When officers arrived, several people began to walk away from the area. While officers were investigating the initial call, Maria Ruiz, age 35, of Holyoke, started another fight with a woman at the scene, said Capt. Matthew Moriarty.

An officer took position between the two women to quell the fight. Ruiz directed her attack upon the officer and bit his arm; the bite broke the officer's skin, Moriarty said.

Ruiz was placed under arrest and charged with disorderly conduct and an attack on a police officer.
